	The Grid-Strip soil reinforcing is an alternate soil reinforcing element to the widely used, crimp-mat (wide mat) soil reinforcing element previously submitted to Kentucky Department of Transportation. The Grid-Strip was developed to avoid the cutting and splaying of the soil reinforcing to avoid obstructions and to minimize the need for specialized structural frames to bypass the obstruction. The Grid-Strip system meets or exceeds all current AASHTO LRFD design requirements.
General Composition of Material:
	The VAWS Stabilized Earth Wall (SEW) is a Mechanically Stabilized Earth retaining wall system consisting of precast concrete panels and discrete steel Grid-Strip soil reinforcing. The SEW system components include a reinforced concrete panel, panel anchor, Grid-Strip soil reinforcement, steel connection bolt and miscellaneous component accessories (i.e. bearing pads, filter fabric, adhesive, etc.). The Grid-Strip soil reinforcing is an alternate soil reinforcing element to the widely used, and approved, wide-mesh, crimp-mat, soil reinforcing offered by VAWS. The Grid-Strip was developed to avoid the cutting and splaying of the soil reinforcing to avoid obstructions and to minimize the need for specialized structural frames to bypass the obstruction. The Grid-Strip system meets or exceeds all AASHTO design requirements. The Grid-Stripâ„¢ soil reinforcement is manufactured from cold drawn wire. The lead end of the Grid-Stripâ„¢ is resistance welded to a special shaped connector. There are two connectors that can be used with the Grid-Strip soil reinforcing, the TAB connector, and the flat BAR connector. The soil reinforcing contains two parallel longitudinal bars that are spaced 2â€ on center. Resistance welded to the longitudinal bars is 3â€ or 4â€ long, steel, transverse bars. The bars are positioned perpendicular to the longitudinal bars and are spaced at 6â€ or 12â€ on center. The spacing of the transverse bars is typically 12â€. The spacing of the transverse bars does not affect the pullout F* values as the values used in the design are based on small scale testing. The longitudinal bars and cross bars are fabricated from W11 material that has a nominal diameter of 0.375â€.

The system manufacturer will be noted as an acceptable vendor alternate in our special note for mse walls when it is appropriate for the proposed retaining wall type. The contractor and vendor must be able to meet all of the personnel, construction, design, and submission timing restrictions outlined in the special note. The special note will be included in the final set of the project plans. NEW PRODUCTS EXPLANATION OF PHASES
Phase 1		Product has been submitted and is pending initial review by the chairman of the committee.
Phase 2		The product is under preliminary review by appropriate sections(s)/Division(s) and awaiting recommendations(s) to the chair from the appropriate section(s)/division(s). Minimal study of available literature is necessary at this stage.
Phase 3		Product is under detailed laboratory and/or literature review by the New Product Review Committee.
Phase 4		Product has been approved for experimental use by the New Product Review Committee. The product may be used on a limited basis; however, change orders must be submitted and approved prior to use of the product. The product will be monitored for performance for two years, but the performance period may be changed depending on the type of product and susceptibility to weathering. If the product performs poorly and poses a safety risk, the product may be removed before scheduled replacement.
Phase 5		The product has been approved for use by the New Products Review Committee. The contractor must have the product approved by the KYTC and the Federal Highway Administration (if applicable) prior to use of the product on a project. Standard Specifications or Special Notes are being developed for this type of material/product.
Phase 6		Current specifications exist for this type of product. It may be requested that the manufacturer submit samples, NTPEP test data, and/or provide requested information to have the product approved and placed on the List of Approved Materials (if applicable).
Phase 7		Product has been sent the New Product Review Committee for final approval consideration.
Phase 8		Not a product to be evaluated by the New Products Review Committee.
Phase 9		Specifications exist for product however, there is no List of Approved Materials for this type of product at this time. Product may be used provided it meets the required specification or special condition(s) listed.
Phase 10		Product has been approved and specifications or special note exists.
Phase 11		Product is approved for use however there is no KYTC specification or special note. Product must meet manufacturer specifications and must have KYTC approval before use.
Phase 12		Product has been experimentally approved previously and is currently under evaluation on select projects. Not permitted on future projects until field evaluations are complete.
